TL;DR
Hariyali Teej 2026, falling on 15 August, is a vibrant festival celebrating love, green attire, and monsoon magic. Learn about its significance, puja vidhi, mehendi designs, and how to celebrate with wishes and rituals.
The Festival That Makes Every Heart Bloom
Hariyali Teej — also called Sawan Teej or Choti Teej — is one of the most loved festivals for women across North India. It falls on the bright third day (Tritiya) of the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), right in the middle of the monsoon season.
The word "Hariyali" simply means greenery — the lush, fresh green that covers the earth after the first rains. It is a day to celebrate love, devotion, nature, and new beginnings.
⚠️ Timings may vary by city. Always confirm with your local Panchang.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati performed intense prayers and penance across 108 rebirths — just so she could be with Lord Shiva. Her patience, faith, and love were so strong that Shiva finally accepted her as his wife on this very day in the month of Shravan.
That is why Parvati is also called "Teej Mata" — the mother of Teej. Married women fast and pray on this day to honour the same love and commitment in their own marriages. Unmarried women also celebrate, praying for a loving and caring husband.
- 1Apply Mehendi the day before — Beautiful henna designs on hands and feet are applied on 14th August. The darker the mehendi, the more love from the husband!
- 2Wake up early and take a holy bath — Start the day clean and pure. Some women observe a Nirjala Vrat (without food or water for the whole day).
- 3Dress in green — Wear a green lehenga, saree, or salwar. Put on green bangles, sindoor, and all 16 shringaar items. This is considered very auspicious.
- 4Worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva — Decorate the idol with flowers, fruits, sweets, and incense. Listen to the Hariyali Teej Vrat Katha.
- 5Swing on the Jhula — Decorated swings hung from trees are a heart of this festival. Women sing traditional Teej songs while swinging together.
- 6Break the fast in the evening — After the puja and seeing the moon, break the fast with fruits, sweets, and a proper meal.
Green is the soul of this festival. Here are the most popular outfit choices:

The most popular choice. Bridal green with heavy embroidery and gold details looks stunning.

Hariyali Teej would be incomplete without these traditional sweets and dishes:
