Raksha Bandhan — literally "the bond of protection" — is celebrated on the full moon (Purnima) of the holy Shravan month. A sister ties a sacred thread called a rakhi on her brother's wrist, prays for his long life, and in return, the brother promises to protect her forever — and hands over a gift (and often, negotiated cash 😄).

But everyone who has a sibling knows the truth: the rakhi is just the symbol. The real festival is the teasing, the childhood memories, the fights over one TV remote, and a love so strong that no distance can weaken it.   Prepare the thali — Decorate a puja thali with roli (kumkum), akshat (unbroken rice), a lit diya, sweets, and of course, the rakhi.

  Apply the tilak — The sister applies a roli-chawal tilak on her brother's forehead, a mark of blessing and honour.

  Perform the aarti — She circles the diya before him, praying for his long life, health, and happiness.

  Tie the rakhi — On the brother's right wrist, within the shubh muhurat. This is the sacred moment of the entire festival.

  Sweeten the bond — She feeds him a sweet (and he feeds her one back!). Ladoo, barfi, or the family favourite.
